Family Bar- Sheshet

The honored Shofar producers of the Bar-Sheshet and Ribak families have a long pedigree that reflects the history of the Jewish people. They lived in exile and recently returned to their homeland in Israel.

The family tradition of the Bar-Sheshet began in Spain in the 14th century, in the time of the great rabbi Yitzhak Bar-Sheshet (also known as the “Ribash”). Amid events that were fiercely controversial for the Jewish community in Spain, the rabbi’s son began carving fine combs and teaspoons out of the horn. He gradually concentrated on the production of Shofars – a difficult but rewarding art. After the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492, the Bar-Sheshet family settled in Morocco and processed Shofar horns for centuries. Their craft was more and more refined.

In 1947, another major chapter in the family history of Bar-Sheshet began. Meir Bar-Sheshet emigrated to Israel in the exodus – a journey that has now gone down in history and has been immortalized in film and print. In a camp for displaced people, where he waited for permission to travel to his old homeland, Meir made a shofar with his bare hands. He could only use the few materials he could find nearby. The next year, in 1948, he founded a Shofar manufacturer’s workshop in Haifa and the family business Bar-Sheshet.

Family Ribak

In the small Polish town of Wlodawa, another family tradition took shape. Like the son of Ribash, Rabbi Yacov Rossman began making fine combs and teaspoons from horn and then proceeded to the production of Shofars. His talent was so extraordinary that his Shofars were celebrated by Jewish communities throughout Poland.

In 1927 Rabbi Rossman emigrated to Palestine and became the first Shofar manufacturer in the then new city of Tel Aviv. The rabbi had no children, so he decided to pass on his knowledge and skills to his cousin Avraham Ribak. He continued the family tradition in the very place where Rabbi Rossman made his first shofar on Israeli soil.
Today, Eli Ribak, the son of Avraham Ribak, and Zvi Bar-Sheshet, the son of Meir Bar-Sheshet, run the company in collaboration. These two long family traditions of devotion to a unique craft are clearly reflected in the beauty of their Shofars.
